Cistern

b0159178_7253522.jpg

We dug it down to this level today.

Perhaps we'll have to dig down another 1m to reach to the bottom of the cistern.

An easy wall

b0159178_9342388.jpg

We found a stone wall which runs to east from the south end of the thick and rigid wall.
Obviously it was built late to the wall which runs from north to south.

A
b0159178_6511889.jpg

We can see some fragments of an arch that collapsed beside the wall mentioned below.

B
The outline of a broken wall in this area came to light.

Wasn't that so ?

Stone pavement

b0159178_5404291.jpg

We dug a test trench along the west side cross section of this area to bring the stratigraphical relations between the volcanic sediments in 472 A.D. and the roman ground level into daylight.

And in the bottom of the test trench we found a part of a pavement with local volcanic stones.
All the stones have irregular forms, but the surfaces of them are smoothed.

B
b0159178_5413899.jpg

It is not horizontal. And contrary to the topographical decline it looks going down gradually from north to south.
Moreover we found that the pavement had been overwhelmed well before the eruption in 472 A.D..

We have removed the latest layer inside the cistern.

B
And during the excavation we found another fragment of a marble statue.
b0159178_55095.jpg
It may represent a part of his/her clothes, and we can see that some color paints remain on it.

C
b0159178_5201645.jpg
And on the surface of the next layer we found something carbonized.
What's that ?

A broken wall and the cistern

b0159178_742842.jpg

A
A broken wall with decorated gate ?
b0159178_7431915.jpg
At the point indicated in photo A we found another broken wall.

B
b0159178_7452267.jpg
We can see a particular structure on it. It looks like a part of a decorated gate.

And its structure is similar to the gate situated in the back of the semi-octagonal room (shown in a photo below), but it measures a little smaller than that gate, and the decoration around it seems to be more simple.

C
We began to excavate the inside of the cistern.
